Gran Paradiso National Park is a protected area in northwestern Italy, established in 1922 as the country’s first national park to conserve Alpine wildlife, notably the ibex. The park centers on the Gran Paradiso massif and adjacent high valleys.

The park contains high mountain terrain with glaciers, alpine meadows and rocky summits; the highest point, Gran Paradiso, reaches 4,061 metres and is a frequent objective for climbers. Extensive trail networks and mountain huts make the park a major destination for hiking, wildlife watching and mountaineering across its valleys.

The area was set aside in the early 20th century to protect the Alpine ibex from extinction, and the national park was formally established in 1922. Since then it has been managed for conservation and sustainable mountain tourism, with ongoing habitat protection and visitor infrastructure.

Gran Paradiso lies in the Graian Alps in northwestern Italy, spanning valleys in the Aosta Valley and bordering Piedmont; access points include mountain towns in the Valsavarenche and Cogne valleys.

  • Founding and purpose: Established in 1922 as Italy's first national park, it was created initially to protect populations of Alpine ibex.
  • Highest summit: The park's highest summit is 4,061 metres, offering classic alpine terrain and mixed mountaineering routes; gondolas and trail networks provide access into high valleys during summer.

What to See #

  • Gran Paradiso peak: The Gran Paradiso massif centres on the mountain of Gran Paradiso itself, which rises to 4,061 metres and is the park's highest point and main mountaineering objective.
  • Access valleys: Valley access routes include the Valsavarenche and Cogne valleys, which provide trailheads, refuges and access to alpine pastures and wildlife watching areas.
