Gran Paradiso
Mountain Italy's first national park with alpine peaks
Within Gran Paradiso National Park, Gran Paradiso is a sought summit for alpine climbers, with marked trails, valley huts and regular sightings of alpine ibex on stone-strewn slopes.
Gran Paradiso is a 4,061-metre peak in the Graian Alps, located in northwestern Italy and forming the high point of the Gran Paradiso massif. The mountain lies within a protected national park that preserves alpine ecosystems and wildlife.
The summit is a classical alpine objective with routes of varying difficulty; many ascents start from mountain refuges and cross glaciers or snowfields depending on season. The area around the mountain features a network of hiking trails, refuges, and climbing routes used by summer hikers and mountaineers.
Historically the area was part of royal hunting grounds of the House of Savoy and later designated a national park to protect fauna such as the Alpine ibex and the mountain environment. Conservation and visitor infrastructure have developed since the park’s establishment in the early 20th century.
Gran Paradiso sits on the border area between Aosta Valley and Piedmont in northwest Italy, with access from valley towns on both sides and a landscape of high alpine valleys and glaciers.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is 4,061 metres, making it one of the prominent four-thousanders in the Graian Alps.
- Park founding: The surrounding park was established in 1922 to protect the area and its wildlife and is Italy's oldest national park.
What to See #
- Summit: Gran Paradiso summit - the mountain peak rising to 4,061 metres and a mountaineering objective for classic alpine routes.
- National Park: Gran Paradiso National Park - a protected area established in the early 20th century that protects alpine landscapes and wildlife such as the Alpine ibex.
How to Get to Gran Paradiso #
Gran Paradiso (the Gran Paradiso massif and national park) is most commonly approached from the Aosta Valley village of Cogne. You can drive from the city of Aosta into the Cogne valley or take regional AST buses from Aosta to Cogne; from the village the Valnontey trailheads and park visitor facilities are a short walk from the centre of Cogne.
Tips for Visiting Gran Paradiso #
- Plan hikes or climbs in the main alpine season (late June-September) when trails and refuges are reliably snow-free; for summit attempts consider spring (May-June) or early autumn for stable weather windows if you have glacier experience.
- Use the two common park access valleys-Cogne (Valnontey) and Valsavarenche-as your base; each offers different approach trails and refuges (the popular Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II is a classic staging point for the summit).
- Book mountain refuges and any guided summit support well in advance for July-August and start summit pushes very early to avoid afternoon storms; wildlife (ibex, chamois) is often easiest to spot at dawn/dusk along quieter side trails.
Best Time to Visit Gran Paradiso #
The best time for Gran Paradiso is summer (June-September) when hiking routes and alpine huts are most accessible; winters are snowy and suitable only for experienced mountaineers.
