The Governorate and its palace were established following the creation of the modern Vatican City State in 1929 and have served as the seat of the civil administration since then.

From central Rome take Metro line A to Ottaviano-San Pietro-Musei Vaticani station; from there it is about a 10-15 minute walk (around 800-1,000 m) to St. Peter’s Square and the palace. Several Rome city buses and tourist bus routes also stop on roads around the Vatican.
By car the Vatican is only a few kilometres west of Rome’s historical centre; driving times are short but traffic and restricted access around the Vatican mean walking or public transport is usually faster.
