The palace is notable for public ceremonies and a mounted or foot guard presence that performs ceremonial duties visible from the square.
The site has served as the center of colonial government under the Spanish and later as the presidential palace of the Republic of Peru, undergoing multiple rebuilds and renovations over the centuries. Its role shifted from a conquistador’s residence to the consolidated seat of national executive authority after independence in the 19th century.

The Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno) sits on Lima’s Plaza Mayor (Plaza de Armas) in the historic centre of Lima - it is in the pedestrianised core of the city and a short walk from the Cathedral and other central landmarks.
Access is by taxi or city bus to downtown Lima; once in the Historic Centre the palace is reached on foot from nearby central streets and plazas. Many hotels in Miraflores and San Isidro offer a short drive into the Plaza Mayor area (allow extra time for traffic).
