Isla Gorgona is a small Pacific island off Colombia’s Pacific coast in Cauca Department, declared a national natural park in 1985. It is notable for its protected tropical forests, marine reserves, and history as a penal colony.

The island offers rainforest hikes, guided wildlife viewing, and marine activities such as snorkeling and diving on nearby reefs. Trails lead to viewpoints and waterfalls and boat trips around the island provide opportunities to see marine mammals and seabirds; guided walks typically last a few hours.

The island hosted a high-security prison from the late 1950s until the early 1980s; after the prison was closed the site and surrounding waters were incorporated into a protected area and management shifted toward conservation and eco-tourism. Facilities and services on the island were developed to support park visitors following its protection.

Gorgona sits in the eastern Pacific off Colombia’s Pacific coast within Cauca Department. Access is by boat from mainland ports on the Colombian Pacific and the island is surrounded by deep ocean waters and fringing reefs.

  • Access tip: Access is by boat from the Pacific coast; trips are weather-dependent and usually require advance booking through licensed tour operators.
  • Wildlife timing: Peak whale-watching season on the Colombian Pacific runs roughly from July to October when migrating humpback whales are commonly sighted offshore.
