Gorbea

Gorbea is a prominent mountain massif in the Basque Country of northern Spain whose highest point reaches 1,482 metres. The name also designates the surrounding protected area, Gorbeia Natural Park, which conserves woodlands and upland habitats.

Hikers use established trails to reach the summit, where a large summit cross serves as a landmark; the massif offers views across the surrounding provinces and varied terrain including beech woodland and rocky ridges. Routes of differing difficulty approach the peak from both the Álava and Biscay sides.

The summit area has been used for local pilgrimage and mountain activities for more than a century, and the massif became formally protected when the natural park was created in the 1990s. The summit cross and the park are central features of how the area is managed and visited today.

Gorbea sits on the watershed between the provinces of Álava and Biscay in the Basque Country, roughly between Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz, and is accessible from towns and trailheads around the massif.
