Golubac Fortress
Fort Medieval Danube fortress guarding the Đerdap gorge
Golubac Fortress perches on the Danube’s right bank at the Iron Gates; tourists arrive for medieval walls and towers, river-cruise views, and nearby hiking along the canyon.
Golubac Fortress is a medieval fortified town on the Danube River in eastern Serbia, positioned at the riverine entrance to the Đerdap Gorge. The visible walls and towers date to the medieval period and the site is one of the better-preserved river fortresses on the Serbian stretch of the Danube.
The fortress complex stretches along a rocky promontory above the river and offers river and gorge views from its ramparts and towers. Many visitors reach the site by road or by tourist boats on the Danube that stop at the fortress landing.
Construction at the site began in the medieval era and control of the fortress changed several times over centuries among regional powers, reflecting its defensive importance on the Danube. Archaeological and conservation work has been carried out to stabilise and present the surviving towers and walls for visitors.
The fortress stands on the right bank of the Danube near the village and municipality of Golubac in eastern Serbia, close to the border with Romania and adjacent to the Đerdap (Iron Gates) river gorge.
- Strategic position: The fortress stands at the entrance to the Đerdap Gorge, where the Danube narrows, giving strong natural defensive value to the site.
