Gola Island
Island Coastal island off northwest Ireland, rural community
Off County Donegal’s coast, reachable by a short ferry; visitors come for coastal walks, cliff views, seabird colonies and seafood served in village pubs.
Gola Island (Gabhla) is a small island off the coast of County Donegal in northwest Ireland, historically a permanently inhabited island that later saw much of its population leave. It forms part of the Donegal Gaeltacht and retains strong Irish-language cultural connections.
The island offers coastal walking routes, sandy bays and panoramic views to the nearby mainland peninsulas. Visitors come for short day trips or to stay in seasonal cottages rather than for extensive services or organized tourism.
Permanent habitation declined in the mid 20th century and the island is now mainly used seasonally, with some restored cottages and visitor accommodation. Local families and community groups maintain cultural and practical ties with the island.
Gola sits just off the coast of Gweedore in northwest County Donegal, within sight of the Donegal mainland and accessible by a short boat crossing from nearby mainland landing points.
- Gaeltacht area: The island is part of the Donegal Gaeltacht and retains Irish-language place names and cultural links to the mainland Gaeltacht communities.
- Access and facilities: There are no extensive public services on the island; access is by private boat or seasonal passenger launches from nearby mainland points and facilities are limited to holiday cottages and walking paths.

- Take the regular passenger ferry from Bunbeg (An Bun Beag) pier-ferry schedules are seasonal so book or check times in advance and aim for an early departure to beat returning-day crowds.
