Gniew Castle

Gniew Castle is a medieval fortress in the town of Gniew in Poland’s Pomeranian Voivodeship, originally built by the Teutonic Order and dating from the 14th century. It is one of the better-preserved brick castles from the Teutonic period in northern Poland.

The complex offers defensive walls, a central keep and restored interiors that house exhibitions and host cultural events. Visitors commonly tour the ramparts, museum displays and participate in occasional reenactments and festivals.

Construction was undertaken by the Teutonic Knights in the 14th century; the castle later passed into Polish control and changed hands over subsequent centuries, suffering periods of decline and later restoration in the 20th century. Restoration work has focused on conserving the masonry and adapting spaces for public use.

The castle sits on the left bank of the Vistula River in the town of Gniew, in northern Poland’s Pomeranian region. It occupies a prominent position overlooking the river and the surrounding lowlands.
