Glyptothek
Museum Museum housing ancient Greek and Roman sculptures
Munich’s Glyptothek houses Greek and Roman sculpture on Königsplatz, attracting students, scholars and museum visitors to classical galleries and rotating exhibitions.
The Glyptothek in Munich is an early 19th-century museum housing one of Germany’s principal collections of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. It was commissioned by King Ludwig I and designed by architect Leo von Klenze.
Galleries present Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman works including statue fragments, full-scale sculptures and funerary reliefs assembled from royal collections. The building itself is a neoclassical structure on Königsplatz and is grouped with neighboring antiquities museums.
Construction took place in the early 19th century as part of King Ludwig I’s cultural building program; the museum opened with his collection of antiquities. The Glyptothek was damaged in World War II and subsequently restored in the mid-20th century.
Situated on Königsplatz in central Munich, Bavaria, the museum lies within the city’s museum quarter and is easily reached from the central train station and city tram network.
