Glanum

Glanum is an ancient Roman and pre-Roman settlement located near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in Provence, France, known for its well-preserved Roman monuments. The site preserves visible structural remains from the Roman period that illustrate urban and funerary architecture.

Above-ground Roman monuments such as a multi-tiered funerary monument and a triumphal arch, together with street remains and foundations of public buildings. Visitors typically view these standing monuments and walk the archaeological park that exposes street outlines and foundations.

Glanum developed as a settlement in the ancient period and later became Romanised, leaving a mix of pre-Roman and Roman remains. Archaeological work over the 19th and 20th centuries has focused on excavating and stabilising the standing monuments and urban layout.

The site lies just outside Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, in southern France, and is easily reached from local roads serving the Alpilles region.
