Park Queensland national park famed for granite tors
A national park in Queensland’s Granite Belt region. Known for walking tracks among granite tors, rock-scrambling routes and seasonal wildflower displays; popular with day-hikers and campers.
Girraween National Park sits in southern Queensland on the Granite Belt near the New South Wales border and is noted for its dramatic granite tors and rock pavements.
The park’s core attractions are large granite outcrops, balancing boulders and rock slabs formed by deep weathering and erosion, which create short scrambling sections and scenic lookout points. Walking options range from short circuits suitable for families to longer day hikes that take several hours, with marked tracks, picnic areas and a basic campground.
The area lies on the traditional lands of local Aboriginal people and was later reserved for conservation by the Queensland government. Over time it has been developed with walking tracks and visitor facilities to manage recreation around the fragile granite landscapes.
Girraween is located in the Granite Belt region of southern Queensland, near the township of Stanthorpe and close to the Queensland-New South Wales border. It is accessed by sealed and unsealed roads from nearby towns and serves as a high-country recreational area.
- Walk lengths: Short walks take around 20-40 minutes while longer routes require several hours, so plan water and footwear accordingly.
