The Giant Mountains are a mountain range on the border of Poland and the Czech Republic, known locally as the Karkonosze or Krkonoše. The range contains alpine ridges, meadows and glacial features and is a popular destination for hiking and winter sports.
The highest summit, Śnieżka (Sněžka), reaches 1,603 m and sits on the international border, offering widely used summit trails and weather observatories. Visitor infrastructure includes marked trails, mountain huts and ski facilities on both the Polish and Czech sides.
Conservation areas and national parks on each side protect the range’s distinctive mountain habitats and scenic landscapes, while tourism is concentrated at trailheads and resort towns that serve hikers and skiers.
Geographically the mountains lie in southwestern Poland and northern Czechia, forming a natural frontier between the two countries and rising above the surrounding lowlands.

How to Get to Giant Mountains #
The Giant Mountains (Karkonosze/Krkonoše) are accessed from Polish rail hub Jelenia Góra and the resort towns of Karpacz and Szklarska Poręba. Take a train to Jelenia Góra, then local bus services or a short taxi ride to Karpacz or Szklarska Poręba where most trailheads begin; walking distances from the towns to lower trailheads are typically under 1-3 km.
By car from Wrocław the drive is roughly 120-160 km depending on route (around 2-3 hours); follow the A4 motorway west and then national roads toward Jelenia Góra/Karpacz.
Tips for Visiting Giant Mountains #
- Approach the Karkonosze from either Karpacz (Poland) or Pec pod Sněžkou (Czech Republic) depending on which trail you prefer; Karpacz is the main Polish gateway to Śnieżka and the central ridge.
- To avoid the busiest stretches of the main ridge, start very early or hike on weekday mornings; popular summit routes become crowded from late morning, especially in summer.
- Spend time at the mountain schroniska (mountain huts) such as Samotnia near Mały Staw - many visitors bypass these atmospheric stops that offer history, shelter and good local food.
Best Time to Visit Giant Mountains #
Visit in summer for hiking and in winter for skiing; mountain weather is changeable, so check conditions before you go.
