Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a well-preserved medieval town in northern Bavaria, notable for its intact defensive walls and timber-framed architecture dating mainly to the High and Late Middle Ages.

Streets cluster around the Market Square, where the Town Hall, Plönlein, and historic shops and museums are concentrated. Highlights include long stretches of walkable town walls, well-preserved towers and gatehouses, and the Medieval Crime Museum with exhibits on law and justice.

The town developed and prospered in the medieval period and retained much of its historic fabric through later centuries; preservation and restoration efforts in the 19th and 20th centuries helped maintain its appearance. The town center sustained damage in World War II and was rebuilt and conserved in the postwar period.

Rothenburg sits above the Tauber River in the Franconian region of northern Bavaria, in a rural valley landscape; the nearest major regional center is Würzburg, which lies to the north of the Tauber valley.
