Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a well-preserved medieval town in northern Bavaria, notable for its intact defensive walls and timber-framed architecture dating mainly to the High and Late Middle Ages.

Streets cluster around the Market Square, where the Town Hall, Plönlein, and historic shops and museums are concentrated. Highlights include long stretches of walkable town walls, well-preserved towers and gatehouses, and the Medieval Crime Museum with exhibits on law and justice.

The town developed and prospered in the medieval period and retained much of its historic fabric through later centuries; preservation and restoration efforts in the 19th and 20th centuries helped maintain its appearance. The town center sustained damage in World War II and was rebuilt and conserved in the postwar period.

Rothenburg sits above the Tauber River in the Franconian region of northern Bavaria, in a rural valley landscape; the nearest major regional center is Würzburg, which lies to the north of the Tauber valley.

  • Walk the walls: Walk the town walls for a near-continuous circuit and good views over timber-framed houses and the Tauber valley; many sections have steep steps.
  • Night Watchman tours: Evening "Night Watchman" guided tours follow a historic route through the old town and are a traditional way to learn the town's history.

What to See #

  • City Walls: A continuous circuit of medieval town walls with towers and gatehouses largely dating from the 13th to 15th centuries, walkable on many sections.
  • Town Hall and Market Square: Medieval market area with the Rathaus combining Gothic and Renaissance elements and a stepped tower providing views over the town.
  • Plönlein: A narrow, picture-book street junction and timber-framed houses often photographed as emblematic of the town's preserved medieval character.
  • Medieval Crime Museum: Museum with collections on law, punishment, and everyday life in the Middle Ages, housed in historic buildings near the town center.
