Lufthansa is a full-service international carrier that positions itself as a premium network airline operating both short-haul European services and long-haul intercontinental flights from its major hubs. It is a founding member of Star Alliance and leverages that partnership to offer broad global connectivity and reciprocal benefits for frequent flyers.

Miles & More - Lufthansa's Frequent Flyer Program

Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program is Miles & More, where members earn award miles and status (status miles) for flights on Lufthansa and participating partners; award miles can be redeemed for flights, upgrades and other rewards. The program’s main elite tiers include Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle, and members benefit from Star Alliance reciprocity for earning and redeeming on partner carriers. Miles & More is generally worth crediting to if you regularly fly to/from Lufthansa hubs or want Star Alliance status, though occasional flyers should compare earning value against other programs.

Where Lufthansa Flies

Lufthansa runs a hub-and-spoke network centered on Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC), serving domestic German routes, an extensive European short-haul network and intercontinental long-haul services to North America, Asia, Africa and South America. Signature services include dense transatlantic links such as Frankfurt-New York as well as numerous Asian routes from its hubs; the carrier also feeds many onward connections across Europe at its two main hubs. As a member of Star Alliance, Lufthansa’s schedule is complemented by alliance partners and codeshares that expand global reach beyond its own metal.

Aircraft and Cabin Classes

Lufthansa operates a mixed fleet that serves short- and long-haul markets: its short- and medium-haul flying is handled with narrowbody types from the Airbus A320 family and regional jets, while long-haul routes use larger widebodies such as Airbus A330/A350 and long-range Boeing types including the 747 and 787. Cabin offerings on long-haul flights include First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class, with lie-flat seats in long-haul business and a distinct First Class experience on select aircraft and routes.

Tips for Flying Lufthansa

  • Check the fare rules before booking because the cheapest economy fares often exclude checked baggage and advance seat assignment.
  • Star Alliance Gold members and passengers in Business/First Class get lounge access; otherwise expect limited lounge access on short-haul tickets.
  • Extra-legroom and preferred seats typically carry a fee on many fare types, so reserve seats early if you need more space.
  • Credit flights to Miles & More if you want status or plan to redeem on Star Alliance partners; casual flyers should compare alternative crediting options.
  • Allow extra connection time at Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC), and if you are eligible, note that First Class customers and top-tier elites have dedicated premium facilities at Frankfurt.
