Gerlitzen

Gerlitzen (Gerlitzen Alpe) is a mountain and year-round recreation area in the Austrian state of Carinthia, known for its ski slopes in winter and hiking routes in summer. The mountain’s summit rises to about 1,900 metres and forms a prominent ridge above nearby lakes.

A developed resort area with a cable car connecting the valley to the summit plateau, multiple ski runs and prepared cross-country tracks in winter, and a network of summer hiking trails and mountain-biking routes. The summit and terraces offer panoramic views over neighbouring lakes such as Ossiacher See and Wörthersee and across the Karawanks.

Alpine tourism and the lift infrastructure were developed during the 20th century to support winter sports and summer mountain recreation; the area evolved from local alpine pasture to a structured resort with marked trails and lifts.

Gerlitzen overlooks the Ossiacher See north of Villach in southern Carinthia, Austria, and is readily accessed from lakeside towns and villages on the mountain’s southern flanks.
