The Gergovie plateau is a volcanic basalt plateau in the Auvergne region of central France, known as the location of the ancient Gallic stronghold and the 52 BCE battle where Vercingetorix defeated Julius Caesar. The plateau is a locally significant historic and archaeological landscape.
Visitors come for panoramic views over the surrounding Limagne plain and for the visible traces of the Gallic oppidum and related archaeological sites; the plateau rises prominently above nearby lowlands. Interpretive markers and monuments on the plateau highlight its role in Gallic and Roman history.
Historical accounts and archaeological work identify the plateau as the site of the Gallic fortifications and the 52 BCE battle between Vercingetorix’s forces and Julius Caesar’s legions.
