Gëlle Fra

Gëlle Fra, literally “Golden Woman,” is a gilded female allegorical statue on a tall column in Luxembourg City that serves as the country’s principal war and liberation memorial. It occupies a prominent position overlooking the Pétrusse valley and the old city.

The monument consists of a gilded figure holding a laurel wreath atop a plinth and column, and it has become a national symbol of remembrance and liberation. It was the subject of removal and controversy during World War II and later reinstated; additional plaques and memorial elements commemorate later conflicts.

The statue was first installed in the interwar period as a national war memorial and subsequently restored and recontextualized after wartime removal. Its prominence and location have made it a regular site for official commemorations and public reflection.

Gëlle Fra stands on Place de la Constitution on the southern edge of Luxembourg City’s historic centre, overlooking the Pétrusse valley and close to the city’s fortifications and ramparts.
