Gaztelugatxe
Island Basque islet linked by stone bridge with hermitage
A rocky islet off Biscay linked by a zigzag stone bridge, Gaztelugatxe features a small hermitage reached by hundreds of steps; visitors hike the trail for coastal views and photography.
Gaztelugatxe is a small rocky islet on the Basque coast linked to the mainland by a stone bridge and a long stepped path, located in the Basque Country of northern Spain. It is crowned by a small chapel dedicated to Saint John (San Juan) and is a prominent coastal landmark.
The islet and chapel are popular for the distinctive walk to the hermitage, coastal views and the rocky coastline; the route culminates at the chapel after the series of steps and the short bridge. The site is known for its dramatic setting rather than extensive built fabric.
The hermitage dates back to the medieval period and has been rebuilt and repaired on multiple occasions; it has served as a small pilgrimage site and local devotional place. The causeway and steps are the principal historic access and have been maintained for visitors.
Gaztelugatxe sits on the Bay of Biscay coast in the Basque Country, near towns on the coastal strip and within driving distance of Bilbao and other coastal communities. The islet projects from a rugged coastline of cliffs and surf.
- 241 steps: The walk from the mainland to the hermitage involves climbing a long stone staircase of 241 steps and crossing a narrow stone bridge to the islet.
