Gavdos
Island Southernmost Greek island with remote beaches
Small island south of Crete with a sparse population, rocky coves and sandy beaches. Travellers visit Gavdos for camping, coastal hiking and a quieter contrast to Crete’s busier resorts.
Gavdos is a small Greek island in the Libyan Sea, located off the southern coast of Crete and administered within the Chania regional unit. It is noted for remote beaches, low-density settlement and its status as one of Europe’s southernmost inhabited islands.
The island’s attractions are natural rather than urban: sandy coves, rocky headlands, a few small villages and walking tracks that cross low hills and coastal terraces. Facilities are basic, and tourism is seasonal, with ferries connecting Gavdos to Crete during the warmer months.
Gavdos has been inhabited intermittently since antiquity and has seen varied uses over centuries, from fishing and pastoralism to limited tourism in recent decades. The island retains a sparsely populated character with a focus on outdoor and beach activities.
Geographically it lies to the south of Crete in the southern Aegean/Libyan Sea and is part of the Cretan island group administratively linked to Chania.
- Southernmost point note: Gavdos is the southernmost inhabited Greek island and contains Europe's southernmost permanent settlement at Vatsiana.
What to See #
- Cape Tripiti (Trypiti): Cape Tripiti (Trypiti) on the island's southern headland - noted as the island's southernmost promontory and site of a lighthouse and panoramic viewpoints.
- Vatsiana (main village): Vatsiana - the island's main settlement, a small village with basic visitor facilities and the island's southernmost year-round community.
- Main beaches: Beaches such as Agios Ioannis and Sarakiniko - sandy coves on the island's western and northern shores popular with visitors seeking remote swimming spots.
How to Get to Gavdos #
Gavdos is reachable only by sea from the south coast of Crete. Regular (seasonal) ferry and boat services run from Paleochora on Crete to Gavdos - Paleochora itself is accessible by car or by KTEL intercity bus from Chania. If driving from Chania expect roughly 1.5-2 hours to Paleochora; from Paleochora the ferry crossing to Gavdos is a direct boat trip (timetables are seasonal, so check schedules and book in advance). On arrival the island’s landing points are a short walk to small settlements and footpaths.
Tips for Visiting Gavdos #
- Ferries from Paleochora (on Crete) are the most common way to reach Gavdos-during July and August book crossings in advance as sailings and small-capacity vessels fill up.
- Visit the southern tip and Tripiti lighthouse at sunset or sunrise for dramatic views and far fewer people; many day-trippers don't stay overnight and miss the island's best light and quiet hours.
- Services are limited on the island outside peak season-plan overnight stays and basic supplies ahead, and consider visiting in shoulder months (May-June or September) for milder weather and fewer visitors.
Best Time to Visit Gavdos #
Visit Gavdos in late spring or early autumn for warm weather, calmer crowds, and comfortable conditions for hikes and beaches.
