Gardens of Lucullus
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman pleasure gardens on Rome's Pincian Hill
The Gardens of Lucullus (Horti Lucullani) in Rome refer to the ancient Roman gardens attributed to Lucullus; visitors study archaeological traces and explore nearby Pincian and city monuments.
The Gardens of Lucullus were a large private hortus in ancient Rome attributed to the Roman general and statesman Lucius Licinius Lucullus and traditionally dated to the 1st century BC. They were famous in antiquity for luxury plantings, terraces and ornamental water features.
Remnants survive only as archaeological traces beneath the modern Pincian/Villa Borghese area of central Rome; there are few continuous above-ground ruins labelled specifically as Lucullus’s gardens. Interest today comes from literary and archaeological references and from the gardens’ role in the development of elite Roman horti rather than from surviving monumental structures.
The gardens were created as a private pleasure estate and over time passed into imperial and later ownership, with parts redeveloped in late antiquity and the medieval period. Excavations and scholarship over the 19th and 20th centuries have linked literary descriptions to the general area but much of the original layout has been lost.
The site lies inside central Rome, north of the Quirinal and adjacent to the modern Villa Borghese/Pincian Terrace area, within walking distance of Via Veneto and the historic city centre.
- Visibility: Located under and around the modern Pincian/Villa Borghese area, so visible traces are limited and best appreciated alongside Rome's other archaeological sites.
- Visiting note: Not a public park you can visit as an intact ancient garden; interpretive material and guided Rome-history tours provide context for the site.
