Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz

An 18th-century landscape and architectural ensemble spanning parks, palaces and designed country estates around Dessau and Wörlitz in Saxony-Anhalt. The Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz is an early continental expression of English-style landscape design informed by Enlightenment ideals.

Extensive planned landscapes linking canals, bridges, islands and viewpoints with architectural features such as temples, follies and palaces. The Wörlitz Palace and surrounding park are focal points for visitors exploring promenades, water features and carefully composed vistas.

The ensemble was conceived as an integrated educational and aesthetic landscape, and many routes and sightlines remain legible today, with historic buildings open to the public in season. Interpretation emphasises the park’s role in landscape design history and its integration of architecture and nature.

Developed from the late 18th century under princely patronage, the Garden Kingdom was expanded and managed as a coherent set of parks and estates that exemplified contemporary ideas about landscape, education and tasteful display. The layouts and buildings date mainly from the late 1700s into the early 1800s.

The sites lie around the town of Dessau and the village of Wörlitz in central Saxony-Anhalt, set in a lowland river and canal landscape accessible from Dessau.
