Why Visit Garapan?#
Located on Saipan, this town is the island’s commercial heart and a top choice for visitors exploring Northern Mariana Islands history and marine life. American Memorial Park commemorations and World War II sites sit close to beaches and the short boat ride to Managaha Island for snorkeling, while local eateries serve Chamorro dishes such as kelaguen and red rice. The combination of wartime landmarks, island reefs and Pacific food traditions gives travelers both historical context and seaside recreation.

How to Get to Garapan#
Garapan is Saipan’s main commercial and hotel district and is the closest population centre to Saipan International Airport (SPN). Most visitors arrive by air and then use taxis or rental cars to get around the island.
Saipan International Airport (SPN): Saipan’s main airport is 5-10 minutes from Garapan by car. Taxis from SPN to Garapan typically take about 10-15 minutes and fares commonly range from about $10-$20 depending on luggage and exact drop-off.
Guam (GUM) / regional connections: International connections often route via Guam or via direct regional flights; arrival on other islands requires a short onward flight to Saipan.
Train: There is no rail network on Saipan.
Bus / Local transit: Saipan has a limited public bus network and informal shared vans that serve main villages; frequency is limited, so visitors often rely on taxis or rental cars. Fares for public buses/shuttles are low (typically a few dollars) and taxis are the fastest option for most arrivals.
How to Get Around Garapan#
Saipan is small and most visitors rely on taxis or rental cars; public buses exist but are secondary. For convenience and to reach remote beaches, hire a car or arrange tours.
- Taxi ($8-$25) - Taxis are the most convenient way to reach Garapan from SPN and to travel around Saipan. Short rides across the island are inexpensive compared with U.S. mainland rates; expect typical fares in the low tens of dollars for most trips.
- Car rental ($40-$80/day) - Renting a car is the most common choice for visitors who want freedom to explore Saipan’s beaches and viewpoints. Roads are generally in good condition, and rental prices vary by season; fuel costs are higher than on the U.S. mainland.
- Public shuttle / bus ($1-$5) - Saipan’s public buses and shared vans cover main routes but run infrequently and are less reliable for tight schedules. They are inexpensive and suitable if you have time and want a very low-cost option.
- Bicycle / Scooter rental ($10-$40/day) - Short-term scooter or bicycle rentals are available and work well for short trips around Garapan and nearby beaches. Helmets and local traffic rules should be observed; scooters are not ideal for long distances or in wet weather.
- Walking - Garapan’s central area is compact and walkable; many hotels, restaurants and the boardwalk are best explored on foot. Walking is pleasant for short trips and island sightseeing near the village.
