Gamzigrad-Romuliana, Palace of Galerius

A late Roman imperial palace and associated ceremonial complex established by Emperor Galerius near present-day Zaječar in eastern Serbia. The site, often called Romuliana (Gamzigrad), is a well-preserved example of tetrarchic imperial architecture and commemorative practice.

Excavated foundations outline palace quarters, reception halls and service buildings; surviving mosaics and sculptural fragments illustrate the site’s monumental character. A memorial sanctuary and temples form part of the funerary and cult landscape connected with imperial commemoration.

Built at the turn of the 4th century AD by Galerius as a combined residence, cult complex and funerary site, Romuliana reflects imperial patronage and the ceremonial needs of the tetrarchy. Excavations have revealed decorative programmes and urban layouts associated with late Roman elite architecture.

The complex lies in eastern Serbia close to the town of Zaječar, set on a river valley site that supported both its defensive and ceremonial functions.
