Gallinara (Isola Gallinara) is a small island in the Ligurian Sea off the coast of Albenga in Liguria, Italy. It is notable for the ruins of a medieval Benedictine monastery and for its status as a protected natural area.
The island’s rocky shores and scrubby interior provide habitat for seabirds and coastal vegetation; landing and activities are managed to limit disturbance to wildlife. Visitors approach the island by private boat from Albenga and commonly view the monastery ruins from the shoreline or the water.
Historically the island housed a religious community from medieval times and later fortifications; its heritage and ecology led to legal protections in recent decades. The island is a visible coastal landmark and part of local conservation planning.
Situated a short distance offshore from Albenga on the Ligurian coast, Gallinara is easily seen from the mainland and lies within the coastal marine environment of western Liguria.

How to Get to Gallinara #
Isola Gallinara (Gallinara) sits a short distance offshore from Albenga on the Ligurian coast (province of Savona). The usual access point is Albenga harbour: seasonal tourist launches and private boats run from Albenga and nearby resort harbours (such as Alassio) during the summer-check local harbour timetables and operators. By car Albenga is reached from Genoa via the A10 autostrada (roughly 85-90 km west of Genoa, about 1-1.5 hours); once in Albenga you transfer to a boat to reach the island (the island is about 1-2 km offshore).
Tips for Visiting Gallinara #
- Catch a morning boat from nearby coastal towns (Albenga/Alassio are the usual embarkation points) when excursion traffic is lighter and sea conditions are typically calmer in summer.
- The island is a regional nature reserve with protections in place-check local regulations before landing, as some parts are off‑limits to protect nesting seabirds and the protected shoreline.
- Walk the short island trails to reach the old church/monastic ruins and the summit viewpoints-many day visitors focus only on the shore and miss the panoramic views and historic remains inland.
Best Time to Visit Gallinara #
The best time to visit Gallinara is late spring through early autumn (April-October) for pleasant Mediterranean weather and easier sea access, avoiding the peak summer crowds if possible.
