Futuna (Wallis and Futuna)

Futuna is an island in the South Pacific that, together with nearby Alofi, forms the constituency often referred to as Futuna within the French overseas collectivity of Wallis and Futuna. The island is populated and retains strong Polynesian cultural traditions.

Landscape on Futuna is volcanic and rugged with small villages, community churches and subsistence agriculture dominant in land use. Religious life and customary leadership remain important aspects of local society.

European contact and subsequent French administration established the island’s modern political status as part of Wallis and Futuna, a French overseas collectivity. Public services, formal administration and external travel connections are coordinated through the territory’s structures.

Futuna lies in the South Pacific Ocean among the islands of the central Pacific and is administered from the territorial capital; access is by infrequent inter-island or charter flights and by boat.
