A marine protected area on Funafuti atoll in Tuvalu. The conservation area was established to conserve coral reefs, fish and other marine biodiversity around the atoll.
The area includes reef flats, lagoon channels and several small islets that serve as habitat for seabirds and reef species - it is known locally for snorkeling and reef life observation. Management aims to balance local subsistence use with biodiversity protection.
The conservation area was declared in the 1990s as a government and community initiative to protect key reef habitats and fisheries. Local monitoring and limited-use rules are part of the management framework.
Situated on the eastern side of Funafuti atoll, the conservation area lies near Fongafale, the main islet of Tuvalu’s capital atoll in the central Pacific.
- Visitor access: Accessible by short boat trip from Fongafale - local operators provide snorkeling and guided visits to the protected reefs.
