Fulda monastery began as a Benedictine foundation established in 744 and developed into one of the principal monastic and learning centres of medieval Germany. The site includes a major Baroque cathedral and preserved monastic precinct in the centre of Fulda.

Saint Sturm, a disciple of Saint Boniface, founded the monastery in 744; the house grew into a powerful imperial abbey over the Middle Ages and was an important centre for missionary work and scholarship. Much of the visible abbey architecture today dates from Baroque rebuilding carried out around the turn of the 18th century.
