Frying Pan Lake
Lake World's largest hot spring lake in Waiotapu geothermal
In Waimangu Volcanic Valley near Rotorua, Frying Pan Lake-rated the world’s largest hot spring by surface area-draws visitors along boardwalks to view geothermal steam, hot pools and volcanic terrain.
Frying Pan Lake is a large geothermal lake in the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand’s North Island. It is frequently cited as the largest hot spring in the world and is notable for its steaming surface and vivid geothermal colors.
The lake is a key highlight of the Waimangu valley, with boardwalks and viewing platforms that allow visitors to observe steaming vents, mineral-rich waters and the surrounding geothermal landscape. Its surface area and continuously active hydrothermal behavior make it a prominent feature in guided and self-guided valley walks.
The lake formed as part of the geothermal system reshaped by the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption and later volcanic and hydrothermal activity. Since then it has been a persistent geothermal feature, with fluctuating temperatures and levels tied to ongoing subterranean activity.
Frying Pan Lake lies within the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley, south-east of Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty. The valley is managed as a privately operated visitor attraction with marked walking routes that connect several geothermal features.
- Geothermal significance: Often described as the largest hot spring-fed lake in the world, it is one of the main attractions within the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley visitor area.
- Visitor safety: Viewed via walking tracks and boardwalks managed within the Waimangu valley; water temperatures and colours vary with geothermal activity so visitors should keep to marked paths.
