Main image

Frying Pan Lake is a large geothermal lake in the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand’s North Island. It is frequently cited as the largest hot spring in the world and is notable for its steaming surface and vivid geothermal colors.

The lake is a key highlight of the Waimangu valley, with boardwalks and viewing platforms that allow visitors to observe steaming vents, mineral-rich waters and the surrounding geothermal landscape. Its surface area and continuously active hydrothermal behavior make it a prominent feature in guided and self-guided valley walks.

The lake formed as part of the geothermal system reshaped by the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption and later volcanic and hydrothermal activity. Since then it has been a persistent geothermal feature, with fluctuating temperatures and levels tied to ongoing subterranean activity.

Frying Pan Lake lies within the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley, south-east of Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty. The valley is managed as a privately operated visitor attraction with marked walking routes that connect several geothermal features.

  • Geothermal significance: Often described as the largest hot spring-fed lake in the world, it is one of the main attractions within the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley visitor area.
  • Visitor safety: Viewed via walking tracks and boardwalks managed within the Waimangu valley; water temperatures and colours vary with geothermal activity so visitors should keep to marked paths.

How to Get to Frying Pan Lake #

Frying Pan Lake is inside the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, south of Rotorua. From Rotorua city centre it is roughly a 20-30 minute drive to the Waimangu visitor car park; from there follow the signed Waimangu Volcanic Valley walking track and boardwalk to viewing areas for Frying Pan Lake (allow a short walk along the valley boardwalk to reach the lake viewing points).

Tips for Visiting Frying Pan Lake #

  • Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best light on the steaming lake and to avoid the busiest guided groups that arrive mid‑day; steam plumes are most photogenic in cooler air.
  • Enter via the Waimangu Volcanic Valley (Waimangu Thermal Reserve) visitor centre and follow the marked walking routes-this is the managed access point with parking, information and the official track network.
  • Don't rush the boardwalk viewpoints along the crater rim: many visitors only glimpse the lake from the main viewpoint, but the short loop walks reveal different steam vents and dramatic geothermal features.
