Frontiers of the Roman Empire – The Danube Limes (Western Segment)

A section of the Danube Limes included in the Frontiers of the Roman Empire, representing the western segment of riverine frontier defences in Lower Austria. It comprises forts, bases and associated settlements aligned along the Danube.

Remains include fortifications, fort towns and the infrastructure that supported river-based defence and logistics, with visible foundations, earthworks and some reconstructed elements at major sites. Interpretive displays at visitor centres explain the Danube’s role as a strategic frontier and supply route.

Roman presence along the Danube intensified from the 1st century AD as the empire established permanent forts and river fleets to control movement and defend the frontier; these installations remained important through the 3rd and into the 4th centuries.

Sites lie along the Danube in Lower Austria, occupying floodplains and terraces beside the river and within easy reach of Vienna and other modern settlements.
