Fribourg Cathedral

Fribourg Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas) is a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral in the medieval Old Town of Fribourg, Switzerland, with main construction phases in the high and late medieval period. Its slender bell tower is a prominent feature of the city skyline.

The tower includes an observation platform that, when accessible, provides panoramic views across the Sarine valley and the surrounding hills. Inside the cathedral visitors encounter a vaulted nave, an elevated choir, multiple side chapels and extensive stone carving and stained glass produced over several centuries.

Construction began in the 13th century and continued through the late medieval period; the building has undergone periodic restoration and conservation work in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cathedral has served as the seat church for the local Catholic diocese since the medieval era.

The cathedral sits in Fribourg’s upper Old Town on a steep slope above the Sarine River, occupying a central location within the pedestrianised historic core of the city.
