Freycinet National Park
Park Tasmanian national park with pink granite coastal beaches
Tasmania’s Freycinet National Park draws walkers and kayakers to Wineglass Bay’s curved white sand, pink granite peaks and coastal trails. Visitors hike, sea-kayak and watch wallabies, seals and coastal birdlife.
Freycinet National Park is a coastal national park on Tasmania’s east coast, centered on the Freycinet Peninsula and renowned for its granite peaks, white-sand bays and coastal scenery. The park includes the internationally recognised Wineglass Bay and the rugged Hazards range.
Hiking trails range from short lookouts to multi-hour coastal walks, and activities include beach visits, sea-kayaking, snorkeling and wildlife viewing. The Wineglass Bay Lookout provides the park’s most photographed panorama, and boat or kayak trips visit the bay and nearby islands.
The area has been protected since the early 20th century to conserve its distinctive coastline and native vegetation and is managed for both conservation and recreation. The park’s landscapes are dominated by granite mountains, sheltered bays and coastal heath.
Freycinet National Park occupies the Freycinet Peninsula on Tasmania’s east coast, with the small service town of Coles Bay at the peninsula’s entrance and boat access to adjacent islands and marine areas.
- Lookout tip: The Wineglass Bay Lookout is a short but steep walk from the main car park and provides the park's signature vista, most popular at sunrise and sunset.
- Gateway town: Coles Bay village is the usual base for park visitors, offering accommodations, tour operators and boat access to marine areas.
What to See #
- Wineglass Bay: Wineglass Bay is the park's best-known beach and viewpoint, with a curved white-sand bay backed by clear turquoise water and granite slopes called the Hazards.
- The Hazards: The Hazards are a chain of pink granite peaks that rise from the peninsula and form the distinctive skyline seen from many viewpoints and beaches within the park.
- Schouten Island: Schouten Island lies off the peninsula and is part of the park's marine zone, offering additional walking routes and small-boat access for marine wildlife viewing.
