Main image

The Frauenkirche in Dresden is an 18th century Lutheran church originally built between 1726 and 1743 by architect George Bähr, destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt and reconsecrated in 2005 after an international reconstruction effort.

The church’s prominent baroque dome, called the stone bell, and the restored interior are primary visitor attractions; a dome walkway provides panoramic views over Dresden’s Neumarkt and the Elbe. The interior is used for services and concerts, and displays elements of original fabric alongside careful reconstructions.

The original church was completed in the mid 18th century, collapsed after the 1945 bombing of Dresden and remained a ruin during the GDR period. A reconstruction project assembled surviving stones and completed the rebuilt church at the start of the 21st century.

The Frauenkirche stands in the Neumarkt square in central Dresden, on the northern bank of the Elbe River within the city’s historic core.

  • Stones of memory: Look for the darker original stones set into the lighter new masonry; these are deliberate reminders of the building's destruction and restoration.

  • Dome and viewing platform: The large stone dome, commonly called the 'stone bell', which dominates Dresden's skyline and includes an internal walkway open to visitors for city views.
  • Nave and interior: The reconstructed nave and interior featuring an ecumenical worship space and concert venue with restored baroque fittings.
  • Original stonework and reconstruction markings: Exterior and interior sections reassembled from many original stones recovered after 1945, visible as darker blocks within the lighter reconstructed fabric.
