Franz Josef Glacier is a valley glacier on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, located within Westland Tai Poutini National Park. It is notable for descending from the Southern Alps into a temperate rainforest environment at unusually low elevations.

Walks and guided glacier tours lead along the valley to viewpoints overlooking the glacier’s lower icefalls; the terminal face sits within a rugged valley accessible by maintained tracks from the road end. Boat and heli-hike operators run seasonal excursions to reach ice margins and higher glacier areas when conditions allow.

Additional visitor information

Viewing platforms and short walks provide reliable vistas without specialist equipment, while guided glacier excursions require experienced operators, safety briefings and appropriate gear. Visitor numbers and access conditions vary seasonally and with glacier movement and retreat.

The glacier has advanced and retreated repeatedly in historical times; maps and photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries document substantial fluctuation and a general trend of retreat in recent decades. Its dynamics and accessibility have made it a subject of glaciological study and tourism development.

Franz Josef Glacier lies on the west side of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, approximately 5 km inland from the Tasman Sea coastline and about 27 km south of the small town of Franz Josef / Waiau in Westland Region.

  • Low-altitude temperate glacier: The glacier descends from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest close to sea level, making it one of the world's few glaciers to terminate at such low elevations in a mid-latitude setting.

How to Get to Franz Josef Glacier #

Franz Josef village sits on State Highway 6. From Queenstown it’s roughly a 5‑6 hour drive (via Haast Pass); from Christchurch it’s around 6-7 hours via Arthur’s Pass. The small township has an airstrip with scenic flight operators offering helicopter access to the glacier. Local shuttle buses run from Greymouth and Hokitika.

Tips for Visiting Franz Josef Glacier #

  • If planning a guided glacier walk or heli-hike, book at least a week in high season (Dec-Feb).
  • For a dramatic approach, take the short walk to the viewpoint at the end of Franz Josef township's Terminal Face Walk rather than trying to reach the glacier terminus on foot-safe and striking.
  • Avoid mid-afternoon in peak summer; late-afternoon light softens the ice and the day-trippers thin out.
