Frankfurter Tor
Plaza Prominent Berlin square and U-Bahn intersection
At the eastern end of Karl‑Marx‑Allee, the twin towers of Frankfurter Tor mark a 1950s Berlin gateway; tourists stop for examples of postwar Stalinist architecture and easy transit connections toward Alexanderplatz.
Frankfurter Tor is a large square and traffic junction in the Friedrichshain district of Berlin, notable for its twin tower blocks that frame the intersection. The name recalls the historic road leading east toward Frankfurt (Oder) and the site is a prominent example of 1950s socialist-classical urban design.
The square is defined by two symmetrical high-rise gate towers on either side of the avenue, creating a ceremonial entrance along Karl-Marx-Allee. The towers, built during the post-war reconstruction period, are a local landmark and a frequent subject of photography.
The current ensemble was constructed in the early postwar decades as part of a broad rebuilding of the avenue and reimagining of the city’s eastern boulevard in a monumental style. The site replaces an earlier historical gate from which the name derives.
Located in Friedrichshain at the intersection of Karl-Marx-Allee and Frankfurter Allee, the square sits east of Berlin’s central Mitte district and is well connected by U-Bahn and tram lines.
- Urban location: Forms the eastern terminus of Karl-Marx-Allee and stands at the junction with Frankfurter Allee, marking a major axis in Berlin's Soviet-era urban design.
