Frangokastello
Castle Venetian-era fortress on Crete with nearby sandy beaches
Venetian-era fortress on Crete’s south coast with a long sand-and-pebble beach. Travelers stop for the castle ruins, swimming and small fishing-town tavernas; local folklore about the ‘Drosoulites’ draws occasional curiosity.
Frangokastello is a late 14th-century Venetian fortress on the southern coast of Crete in the Rethymno region, built to house a garrison and protect the coastline. The fortress sits directly on a broad sandy beach and is one of the better-preserved small Venetian castles on the island.
Visitors come to walk the crenellated walls, explore the interior ruins and swim on the beach that lies immediately seaward of the fort. The site is also associated with a local natural-meteorological optical phenomenon called the Drosoulites, reported as faint dawn apparitions under certain conditions.
The castle was constructed by Venetian authorities in the late 1300s as part of their coastal defence system and remained a strategic point through later centuries. Over time the structure saw military use in successive conflicts and today is maintained as a historical site open to the public.
Frangokastello sits on Crete’s south coast in the municipality of Sfakia, near the small settlement of the same name and accessible by the coastal road that links southern Cretan towns; it is set directly on the Mediterranean shoreline.
