Fossoli camp

Fossoli camp is a former World War II internment and transit camp located in Emilia-Romagna, near the town of Carpi in the province of Modena; it was used during the Fascist and German periods for prisoners of war, political detainees and later for the deportation of Jews.

On-site features include preserved foundations and layout traces of the original camp and a Memorial Centre that presents archival material, photographs and testimony. The site functions as a place of memory and historical documentation rather than a restored barracks complex.

The camp was established under the Fascist regime in the early 1940s and came under German control following the 1943 armistice; it was used as a transit point for deportations to extermination camps during 1943-1944. After the war the area went through various phases of reuse before being preserved as a memorial and documentation centre.

The Fossoli site lies in the agricultural plain near Carpi in the province of Modena, Emilia-Romagna, and is accessible by road from the surrounding towns.
