Forum of Nerva
Archaeological Site Small ancient Roman forum built during Emperor Nerva
Small Imperial forum built under Nerva adjacent to the Roman Forum, with surviving columns and dense archaeological layers; history visitors include guided walking tours of ancient civic architecture.
The Forum of Nerva, also called the Transitorium, is one of the Imperial fora in Rome constructed at the end of the first century AD during the reign of Emperor Nerva. It is the narrowest of the Imperial fora and was designed as a transitional urban plaza linking older forums.
Visitors encounter a narrow, elongated plaza framed by colonnades and the remains of temple architecture, with visible archaeological layers and fragments integrated into the modern city streetscape. The compact footprint concentrates sculptural fragments and architectural details in a short stroll along the site.
Commissioned under Emperor Nerva and largely completed around the turn of the first century AD, the forum was designed to connect existing civic spaces and host temple and commemorative functions. Over centuries the site was buried, quarried for building materials, and later excavated; surviving ruins and fragments have been exposed and conserved in modern times.
Situated in central Rome, the Forum of Nerva lies between the Forum of Augustus and Trajan’s Forum, adjacent to the Via dei Fori Imperiali and within walking distance of the Roman Forum and Colosseum.
- Scale and date: Built at the end of the 1st century AD, it is the smallest of the Imperial fora in Rome and sits between the Forum of Augustus and Trajan's Forum.
What to See #
- Temple of Minerva: The Temple of Minerva formed a focal point within the forum complex and once occupied part of the rear of the narrow plaza.
- Colonnades and forum space: Colonnaded precincts and the narrow forum space known as the Transitorium form the main archaeological remains visible today along the edge of the Imperial Fora.
