Forum of Augustus
Archaeological Site Imperial Roman forum in Rome built under Augustus
Augustus’ Forum in Rome contains the remains of temples, marble columns and reliefs commissioned by the emperor; visitors study Roman political architecture and stroll between the nearby Imperial Forums.
The Forum of Augustus is one of the imperial fora in Rome, built under Emperor Augustus to provide a ceremonial and religious precinct complementing the Roman Forum. It was officially dedicated in 2 BCE and centered on the Temple of Mars Ultor.
The complex combined a monumental temple, colonnaded courtyards, and decorated porticoes that housed statues and served both cultic and public ceremonial uses. It functioned as a place for legal proceedings, senate delegations, and imperial commemorations tied to Augustus’s rule.
Constructed in the late first century BCE, the forum was part of a broader program of building that reshaped Rome’s central civic and religious landscape under Augustus. Archaeological remains are visible adjacent to the Via dei Fori Imperiali and have been the subject of ongoing excavation and restoration.
The ruins lie in central Rome, near the Capitoline and Roman Forum areas, and are accessible from the historic centre and major tourist routes.
