Forum Boarium
Plaza Ancient Roman cattle forum by the Tiber with temples
At the bend of Rome’s Tiber, the Forum Boarium preserves ancient temples, classical ruins and the cattle market site; visitors see the Temple of Portunus, the Temple of Hercules and nearby Capitoline slopes.
The Forum Boarium is the ancient cattle market of Rome, located on the Tiber’s bank between the Capitoline Hill and Tiber Island, and contains well-preserved republican-era temple architecture. It functioned as a commercial and port area in the late Republic and early Imperial periods.
In antiquity the area served as Rome’s cattle market and river port, active from the city’s Republican period. The temples and adjoining structures reflect the Forum Boarium’s role as a commercial and religious focal point on the Tiber; both temples survived successive phases of urban change and reuse.
The Forum Boarium sits in central Rome on the Tiber’s western bank, adjacent to Tiber Island and within easy walking distance of the Roman Forum and other central antiquities.
- Survival of temples: The two surviving Roman temples are unusually well preserved and are visible from street level without entering a museum setting.
- Visiting tips: The site is a compact area beside the Tiber and is often visited in combination with nearby Tiber Island and the Borgo area of central Rome.
What to See #
- Temple of Hercules Victor: The circular marble temple from the late Republican period that stands near the river edge and is one of the best-preserved classical round temples in Rome.
- Temple of Portunus: The rectangular Ionic temple traditionally called the Temple of Portunus, of late Republican date and set on a high podium close to the Tiber bank.
