Fortezza of Rethymno

The Fortezza of Rethymno is a Venetian-built fortress occupying a commanding hill above the old town and harbour of Rethymno on the island of Crete. Construction took place in the late 16th century to strengthen the town’s sea defences.

The fortress complex includes extensive bastions, curtain walls and internal enclosures that were designed to control the town and harbour approach. Today the ruins and ramparts are a principal historic landmark in Rethymno, visited for both their military architecture and panoramic sea views.

Constructed under Venetian rule in response to growing Ottoman naval power and pirate raids, the Fortezza served as the town’s main defensive stronghold; it later passed into Ottoman hands and experienced changes under subsequent administrations. Over time parts fell into disrepair while other sections were reused or adapted.

The Fortezza sits at the western end of Rethymno’s historic centre, on a low headland overlooking the town and the bay on the northern coast of Crete, within easy walking distance of Rethymno’s old harbour and streets.
