Fort Eben-Emael near Liège is a 1930s Belgian fortification noted for its role in the 1940 German airborne assault; the site offers military-history tours, preserved casemates and interpretive exhibits.
Fort Eben-Emael is a Belgian fortress complex in Wallonia constructed in the early 1930s to guard the Albert Canal and approaches toward Liège. It was a heavily fortified position of concrete and steel with extensive underground galleries and artillery emplacements.
On 10 May 1940, German forces executed a glider-borne assault that neutralized key gun positions and allowed rapid capture of the fort, an action noted for its use of airborne troops and shaped charges. Much of the action and damage from that period has shaped the site’s historical interpretation.
Today parts of the fort are preserved as a museum and military heritage site, with accessible galleries, exhibits, and guided displays that explain the fort’s construction and 1940 events.
The fort sits close to the Albert Canal near the Belgian-Dutch border, between the cities of Liège and Maastricht, and is reachable by regional roads from nearby towns.
