Fort de Joux

Fort de Joux (Château de Joux) is a fortified complex on a limestone promontory in eastern France, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. The site has medieval origins and was adapted over centuries into a modern fortification and later used as a prison.

The complex’s keep, curtain walls and artillery-era outworks dominate the ridge above the valley and are the main visitor attractions, together with a museum and preserved prison cells. Interpretive panels and exhibitions explain the fort’s military evolution and penal role.

The castle originated in the medieval period and was repeatedly modified through the early modern and modern eras to meet changing military technology. It served as a state prison at various times in its history, and the arrival and death of Toussaint Louverture there in 1803 is a notable historical event connected to the site.

The fort stands on a rocky spur overlooking the valley of the river Loue near Pontarlier, occupying a strategic high point on historic routes through the Jura.
