Fort Bourtange
Fort Star-shaped 16th-century fortress and historic village
A restored 18th-century star fort in Groningen province, Fort Bourtange preserves geometric ramparts, canals and a museum; visitors explore the fortifications and exhibits on Dutch military history.
Fort Bourtange is a 16th-century star fort near the village of Bourtange in Groningen province, Netherlands, originally constructed during the Dutch Revolt. Its five-pointed bastioned layout is the defining characteristic of the site.
The central fortification and surrounding earthworks are the main attractions, with a clearly legible star-shaped plan of ramparts and moats roughly matching the original defensive geometry. The interior hosts a small reconstructed village and museum displays that illustrate military and civilian life within the fort.
The fort was built in 1593 under the command of William Louis of Nassau to control the road between Germany and the city of Groningen; it remained militarily relevant through the early modern period and later fell into disuse. A comprehensive restoration campaign in the 20th century rebuilt the fort and village for heritage and tourism purposes.
The site sits at the village of Bourtange in the far northeast of the Netherlands, in a flat agricultural landscape near the German border and accessible by road from larger towns in Groningen province.
- Restoration: Extensively restored in the 1960s to recreate its historic star-fort appearance and now operates as a living history site with museums and period buildings.
- Viewing points: Walkable ramparts offer full 360-degree views of the surrounding lowlands; paths on the earthworks make the star shape easy to appreciate from ground level.
What to See #
- Star ramparts: A star-shaped ring of earthen and masonry ramparts with external moats and glacis, laid out in a five-point bastion plan and rebuilt during 20th-century restoration work.
- Fort village and museum: Historic fortified village occupying the interior, reconstructed traditional houses and an open-air museum with period displays.
- Moat and outerworks: System of outerworks including moats and access gates that encircle the central fortification and are walkable on marked paths.

Tips for Visiting Fort Bourtange #
- Enter the village from the north gate: it keeps the best view of the star-shaped moat and avoids the thin tourist path that squashes the main square.
- Time the visit for a living-history program (check local listings) - the costumed workshops and cannon demonstrations make the geometry of the place click.
- Circumnavigate on foot rather than taking the short shuttle; the battered, low stone kerbs and wear marks on the wooden drawbridge tell more stories than the museum plaques.
Best Time to Visit Fort Bourtange #
Best visited outside high summer for steady light and thinner crowds; winters are atmospheric but wet and often muddy.
