Forchtenstein Castle

Forchtenstein Castle is a fortified hilltop castle in the Burgenland region of eastern Austria, notable for its defensive walls and museum displays. It occupies a commanding position above the local town and surrounding countryside.

The site offers fortified rooms, a keep and exhibition spaces containing historic armaments and period furnishings, which form the focus of visitor tours. The battlements and towers provide panoramic views of the valley below.

The core fortifications were erected in the medieval period and the property came into the hands of the Esterházy family in the early modern era; subsequently it was adapted to serve as both a defensive stronghold and a residence while parts of the complex were fitted to display family collections.

The castle stands above the town of Forchtenstein in southern Burgenland, on a rocky prominence typical of regional medieval fortresses.
