Fontfroide Abbey

Fontfroide Abbey is a former medieval monastery near Narbonne in the Occitanie region of southern France, founded in the medieval period and historically associated with the Cistercian monastic tradition. The complex is notable for its preserved cloister, church spaces and monastic buildings.

The site offers visits to the cloister, chapter house, refectory and church, where visitors can see medieval stonework and Gothic additions and walk cultivated gardens and grounds. Exhibited spaces and rooms display architectural details from the medieval and later periods and the abbey hosts cultural events and guided tours.

Established in the medieval era and linked to monastic reforms in the 12th century, the abbey developed over several centuries with construction phases that produced Romanesque and Gothic elements.
