Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi
Monument Baroque Bernini fountain in Piazza Navona depicting four rivers
Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi sits at Piazza Navona, depicting four river gods representing different continents. Tourists gather for baroque sculpture, fountain detail and the square’s cafés and street artists.
The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is a 17th-century Baroque fountain in Rome’s Piazza Navona, sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and completed in 1651. It is topped by an ancient obelisk and represents four major rivers from different parts of the world.
The fountain features four allegorical river gods-each representing the Nile, Danube, Ganges and Rio de la Plata-arranged around a sculpted rock formation supporting the obelisk. Water jets, carved animals and plant motifs are integrated into the marble group to create a theatrical urban centerpiece.
Commissioned by Pope Innocent X as part of the papal redevelopment of Piazza Navona, the fountain remains one of Bernini’s most influential public works and a standard example of Roman Baroque urban design.
It occupies the central axis of Piazza Navona in Rome’s historic core, adjacent to the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone and surrounded by cafes and public spaces popular with tourists.
- Artist and date: Sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and completed in 1651 for Pope Innocent X, it stands at the center of Piazza Navona beneath an ancient Egyptian obelisk.
- Iconography: Four river figures represent the Nile, Danube, Ganges and Rio de la Plata, symbolizing continents known to 17th-century Rome.
