Folegandros
Island Cycladic island with clifftop villages and secluded beaches
Small Cycladic island southwest of Santorini with a clifftop Chora, narrow lanes and isolated beaches; visitors favor hiking, quiet tavernas and sunset views from the village square.
Folegandros is a small Cycladic island in the South Aegean, part of Greece’s island groups, known for its compact scale and cliffside main village. The island covers a small area and maintains a low permanent population, making it quieter than many other Cyclades islands.
The island offers rugged cliffs, short coastal walks and a handful of beaches such as Agali and the boat-accessible Katergo; trails between the port and the clifftop town are commonly used by visitors. The compact whitewashed Chora (main town) sits on a ridge and provides views across the Aegean and direct access to taverns and galleries.
Folegandros has been inhabited since antiquity and its culture reflects long Cycladic settlement patterns; control of the island passed between regional powers over centuries before becoming part of the modern Greek state. Agricultural and seafaring livelihoods historically shaped the island’s villages and terraces.
The island lies in the central-southern Aegean Sea, positioned between the larger islands of Milos and Santorini. The main harbour is Karavostasi; connections to Piraeus and other Cyclades ports are seasonal and usually routed through larger islands in the group.
- Chora viewpoint: Best light for photos and sea views is late afternoon and sunset from the main square in Chora, which sits on a cliff above the harbour.
- Transport note: Ferry connections are frequent in high season but become limited in autumn and winter, so check schedules before travelling.
What to See #
- Chora (Folegandros): Perched on a steep ridge above the harbour, the island's principal settlement with narrow alleys, whitewashed houses and a small central square dominated by the Church of Panagia.
- Karavostasi: Small port village and ferry landing that is the main arrival point for most visitors; ferries connect here to other Cyclades islands in summer.
- Agali Beach: Pebble and sand beach on the island's west coast with nearby tavern and access to hiking routes; popular for swimming and sunsets.
- Katergo Beach: Remote small bay reached on foot or by boat from Karavostasi, noted for dramatic cliffs and clear water; not serviced by regular buses.
How to Get to Folegandros #
Folegandros is served by ferries from Piraeus (Athens) and from other Cycladic islands such as Santorini and Naxos; schedules vary seasonally and crossings take several hours from Piraeus and much less from nearby islands. Many visitors fly to Santorini or Athens and continue by ferry to Folegandros (check conventional and high‑speed services for duration and frequency).
Ferries dock at the small port of Karavostasis; from there the island bus (timed to ferry arrivals) or a short taxi ride will bring you up to Chora (the main village) - the climb from the port to Chora is steep and takes around 20-40 minutes on foot.
Tips for Visiting Folegandros #
- Arrive in Chora in the late afternoon and stay until after sunset - day‑trippers who arrive on afternoon ferries leave later, and the island's cliffside Chora and its viewpoint are much quieter for evening light and dining.
- Use Karavostasis, the main port, as your entry point and head to the Chora footpath or the subida (the paved switchback) for the classic clifftop approach; timing arrivals to miss the mid‑day ferry rush helps avoid crowds.
- Explore inland: many visitors stick to the Chora and Katergo beach - the north inland villages and the walking route to Ano Meria offer quieter traditional architecture and small local tavernas that most day visitors miss.
