Föhr is an island in the North Frisian archipelago off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, known for its beaches, low dunes, and cultivated inland landscape. It is part of the Wadden Sea area and has a long history of Frisian culture.

Popular features include sandy bathing beaches, thatched houses in traditional villages, and seaside resorts. The island’s coastline and tidal flats are part of the wider Wadden Sea ecosystem and attract visitors for beach activities, birdwatching, and traditional island tourism.

Historically Föhr developed a distinct Frisian culture with local dialects and seafaring traditions; some villages retain historic churches and farmhouses. Tourism and local services centred on towns like Wyk sustain the island economy.

Föhr lies within the Wadden Sea off the Schleswig-Holstein coast and is reached by ferry from Dagebüll; the island is east of Amrum and south of Sylt within the North Frisian group.

  • Ferry access: Ferries connect Föhr with the mainland from Dagebüll, providing the main public access for vehicles and passengers.

How to Get to Föhr #

Föhr is reached by ferry from the mainland to the main port town Wyk auf Föhr - regular car and passenger ferries operate from Dagebüll (W.D.R. is the principal operator). Dagebüll is reachable by regional trains and local buses from nearby towns such as Niebüll, and by car via the west-coast roads; the ferry terminal in Wyk is only a few hundred metres’ walk from the town centre and beaches.

Tips for Visiting Föhr #

  • Take the regular ferry to Wyk (most services run from Dagebüll) and arrive early in the morning to avoid weekend arrival crowds and get first pick of bike rentals for exploring the island.
  • Most visitors stick to Wyk's beaches; rent a bike and cycle to the west and south coast villages (Nieblum, Utersum) to see Frisian thatch houses and quieter shoreline views that many day-trippers miss.
  • Join a guided Wadden Sea (Watt) walk at low tide-these UNESCO-protected mudflat tours depart from local operators and reveal marine life and landscape features you won't see from the strand alone.
