Florence Cathedral, formally Santa Maria del Fiore, is the city’s main church located in central Florence, Italy, and a key monument of the Italian Renaissance. Its most famous feature is the large brick dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.

The cathedral’s façade and nave, Brunelleschi’s Dome with an internal diameter of about 45.5 metres, Giotto’s Campanile, the Baptistery with Ghiberti’s bronze doors and the Opera del Duomo Museum. The complex forms a compact ensemble around Piazza del Duomo and draws large numbers of visitors year-round.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1296 to designs by Arnolfo di Cambio; Brunelleschi completed the dome in 1436 using an innovative double-shell technique. Work on the exterior marble façade and interior decorations continued over subsequent centuries.

The cathedral sits at the heart of Florence’s historic centre, within short walking distance of the Arno River and other major museums and squares. It is served by the city’s pedestrian streets and is a central landmark for orientation in Florence.

  • Visits to the dome: Climbing the Dome requires a ticket and involves a steep ascent of stairs; advance booking is recommended during high season to avoid long queues.
  • Tickets: The cathedral complex is concentrated around Piazza del Duomo in central Florence, and combined tickets cover the cathedral, dome, campanile, baptistery and museum.
